I visited the Devon - shire horse farm centre at Wealmpton, a working farm, for my painting. Here, heavy horses are used throughout the year for all farm work. At least once a week some of the horses are taken into the old forge on the farm to be shod. There is only one concession to material practice; the old bellows have given way to electricity. Otherwise everything is as it was in the days gone by; the ringing tones of hammer on anvil, that characteristic smell of singed hair as a new show is tried and fitted in clouds of smoke, and the light of the fire dancing among the cobwebbed beams of the ancient roof. All the while "Princess" stands placidly looking on as her new shoes are fitted.
